From a NASA engineer to Grab CTO
We are delighted to invite Mark Porter, the CTO of Grab, to come to MIT and share with the students and researchers how Grab is using AI and other technologies to digitalize Southeast Asia and uplifting the lives of 640 million population across 11 countries. Dubbed the "Uber of Southeast Asia", Grab is the biggest unicorn of Southeast Asia backed by SoftBank, Toyota, Honda, Uber, and Didi, to name a few. In the past couple of years, Grab has successfully transformed itself from the largest ridehailing company in the region to an everyday SuperApp, encompassing businesses such as payments, food delivery, logistics, entertainment, etc. powered by Grab's venture efforts in self-driving cars and sensor fusion technologies.
Students and researchers interested in the areas of Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, Sensor Networks, Smart Cities, Connected Cars are especially encouraged to join us in the talk while enjoying spicy chicken wings and bubble tea. In addition, Mark will also be sharing his owne life stories of how he went from a CalTech Computer Science geek to a NASA engineer, a VP at Oracle, a GM at Amazon AWS, and now CTO at Grab.

Mark Porter
Mark Porter is the CTO of Grab, overseeing Grab's technology infrastructure and teams dedicated to its Transportation business, which includes private car hires, taxi-hailing, motorbike taxis, carpooling, multimodal services and more. Based in Seattle, Mark leads and works with teams in Grab's R&D centers in Singapore, Seattle, Beijing, Bangalore, Jakarta, and Ho Chi Minh City to deliver a reliable, safe, seamless and personalized transport experience for all of Grab's users.
Mark has been programming since he was 11, and has often described his career as “mostly worshipping the ACID transaction, with a pretty exciting detour into digital video.” Mark has a deep background in databases, systems programming, video compression, system performance and scalability and is a named inventor on 11 patents. Prior to joining Grab, Mark was a General Manager for 5 years at Amazon Web Services, leading the Relational Database Service (RDS), Amazon Aurora, RDS for PostgreSQL, the AWS Database Migration Service and the AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT). Mark was also a Director of Engineering for the RDS Platform. Before Amazon, Mark held positions as CTO of Shared Learning Initiative for NewsCorp (a joint project with the Gates Foundation), Vice President of Engineering at Oracle Corporation and engineer at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition, Mark founded and ran his own electronics services integration company.
Mark holds a Bachelor’s degree from Caltech. He is a proud husband of 20 years and a proud father of 5 very technically-savvy children. He loves to ski, sail, read, and is learning to play the piano.
